Sam Mackinnon has been a member of the following teams – South East Melbourne Magic from 1994 to 1998, Townsville Crocodiles from 1999 to 2001, West Sydney Razorbacks from 2002 to 2005, Brisbane Bullets from 2006 to 2008 and Melbourne Tigers from 2008 onwards. He is 197 centimeters tall and weighs 104 kg. He has been assigned the position of Guard or Forward.
For the 2007 season, Mackinnon was selected as the Best Defensive Player and Most Valuable Player in the NBL. He also won the Larry Sengstock Medal as the Grand Final MVP in 2007. While playing for West Sydney, he developed into their best shooter. He was ranked 2nd in field goal percentage averaging 14.5 points per game in the 2004-05 season and shooting 45.5 percent off the floor. In 2005, he was one of the top defenders of the league and averaged 8.2 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. In 1994, he was selected as NBL Rookie of the Year.
