At the 2007 NBA Draft, Smith was picked at 20th overall by the Miami Heat, who later decided to trade him out to the Philadelphia 76ers on the same day.

After 9 games for the Rocky Mountain Revue, in the NBA Summer League, Smith began the 2008-09 season for the Sixers, playing 76 games at 14.6 minutes per game. He averaged just 4.5 points and 3 rebounds per game, not grabbing too many headlines along the way.

He missed the entire 2008-09 season and most of 2009-10 due to the injury as he attempts to return to playing fitness and get off the inactive list.
