High School and College Career

He grew up in Canada and later moved to the United States where he attended IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

In 2010, he committed to play college basketball for Stanford University and was there from 2010 to 2014. In that time, he was named to the First-team All-Pac-12 twice. He also helped lead Stanford to the NIT Championship in 2012.

Professional Career

Powell declared for the NBA in 2014 and joined the 2014 NBA Draft. He was a second-round pick by the Charlotte Hornets. They traded him to the Boston Celtics. In the same year, he also played for the Maine Red Claws.

Also in 2014, he started playing for the Dallas Mavericks. From 2014 to 2015, they assigned him to play in the NBA G League for the Texas Legends.

In 2019, Powell signed a contract extension with the team. In July 2023, he re-signed to continue playing for the Mavericks.
