While in college, he was named the Big 12 Player of the Year in 2013. He was also named to the First-Team All-Big 12 for both 2013 and 2014. In 2013, he was also named the USBWA National Freshman of the Year. He stayed with Oklahoma for two seasons before he decided to declare for the NBA.

NBA Career

He was drafted into the NBA by the Boston Celtics. This was during the 2014 NBA Draft. He was the team’s sixth overall pick in the first round. He played with the Celtics during the Summer League. He made his NBA later that year but was forced to miss games because of an ankle injury. In 2015, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.

In 2019, he became a restricted free agent with the Celtics. The team later re-signed him. In the same year, he was given the NBA Hustle Award. He was also named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team twice, once in 2019 and again in 2020.

In the 2021 season, Smart was suspended for a game after he used threatening language toward a game official. The Celtics re-signed him in 2022. The contract was a reported US$77 million.
