Darrell Armstrong did his schooling from the Ashbrook High School in Gastonia, North Carolina. He later attended the Fayetteville State University where he played with the college basketball team called the Fayetteville State Broncos. Failing to get drafted at the end of his college career, Armstrong went on to play with the United States Basketball League and the Global Basketball Association. Later in 1994, Armstrong signed with the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association. In 1997 he was awarded the NBA Sixth Man of the Year. Armstrong also won the NBA Most Improved Player Award in 1999. In 2003, he was a free agent and was signed by the New Orleans Hornets. In 2004, he was sold to the Dallas Mavericks with who he appeared in the 2006 NBA finals. He was dealt to the Indiana Pacers in 2006. Once again a free agent in 2007, Armstrong agreed to sign with the New Jersey Nets.
