Onyeka Okongwu is a professional basketball player who is currently playing for the Atlanta Hawks as the team’s power forward and center.
Early and Personal Life
Okongwu was born in Los Angeles, California, however, his family transferred to Chino Hills, California. He attended Chino Hills High School where he played for the varsity basketball team. His 3 other brothers named Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo were also playing for the team, who led the team to play for the national basketball tournaments.
His team also ranked number 1 in the country and achieved the California Interscholastic Federation Open Division state title. As a great contributor to the team, he was named MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year. During his sophomore year, he led Chino Hills to reach the CIF Southern Section Open Division semifinals and Regional semifinals.
Basketball Career in College
After he finished high school, he received offers from UCLA and USC, until in May 2018, he decided to attend USC. As a recruit, he was rated as a 5-star recruit by Rivals and ESPN. When he entered college, he immediately became the best basketball player, after contributing 20 points with 13 rebounds per game that led the team to victory against Florida A&M.
In November 2019, he posted a career-high 33 points with 17 free throws against Pepperdine University. He had also earned the Pac-12 Conference Player of the week. By the next month, he contributed 27 points with 14 rebounds against Harvard University at the Orlando Invitational.
Because he is a major contributor to the team, offers came flocking it and the NBA Draft is too reachable for him. In March 2020, he announced that he will be joining the 2020 NBA Draft.
Okongwu was successfully selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2020 NBA Draft. In November 2020, he signed with the Hawks. As of now, he was sidelined after he sustained an injury.
