Both of his parents were volleyball players and were members of the national team. They opted to have Jacob play basketball because of his height and because there was a youth basketball program near their home.

University of Utah

He played college basketball for the Utah Utes. Poeltl was spotted by Andy Hill who had gone to Macedonia to look for recruits. He had a successful college career and won a number of accolades include being awarded the Pete Newell Big Man Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award in 2016. In the same year, he was also named to the First-team All-Pac 12. He was also named the Pac-12 Player of the Year.


He declared for the NBA in April 2016. He decided to give up his last two years of college eligibility. He was selected by the Toronto Raptors during the first round. He was their 9th overall pick. He stayed with the Raptors until 2018.

In July 2018, he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs. He was later re-signed by the Spurs in November 2020.
