Rowan Alexander Barret Jr. or better known as “RJ” Barett is a professional basketball player of the National Basketball Association who is currently signed with the New York Knicks. The Canadian-born Barret plays small forward and shooting forward with the Knicks after being selected as its third overall pick during the NBA draft in 2019.
Barrett was born in Toronto to Rowan Barrett and Kesha Duhaney. His father was a former professional basketball in France. Due to his father’s career, Barrett had lived in a number of countries and was able to play in clubs where his father was a part. In 2008, his family settled in Mississauga after his father resigned from his professional basketball career. At age 12, he sometimes trained with his godfather and NBA coach, Steve Nash. He was also considered as one of the best under-12 players in Ontario and had played with the Amateur Athletic Union.
In high school, Barrett initially played with the basketball team of St. Marcellinus Secondary School that was located in Mississauga before transferring to Montverde Academy in Florida. During his short stint in St. Marcellinus, he was named as the most valuable player of the Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament and invited to play the all-star game of the Region of Peel Secondary Schools Athletic Association. It was in September 2015 when he officially transferred to Montverde Academy. During his freshman year at Montverde, he was able to earn MVP honors during the 2016 Jordan Brand Classic International Game and was named Freshman All-America First Team by MaxPreps. Barrett continued to play for Montverde until his graduation. He earned the 2018 Nike Hoop Summit MVP award and was considered as a five-star recruit. He was also ranked number 1 overall recruit in the 2018 class.
Barrett step into the gates of Duke University in 2018. He only spent one season as a basketball player for the university before announcing his intention to join the 2019 NBA Draft.
On October 23, 2019, Barrett made his NBA debut. This was after being the third overall pick by the New York Knicks in the 2019 NBA draft that happened on June 20, 2019.
