Career
He was five years old when he started playing basketball. During his third grade, he took part in Bryce Drew’s basketball camps. He also joined the Amateur Athletic Union during his fourth-grade level.
After completing his elementary years in Gary, his family moved to Tennessee. He started his high school basketball career as one of the varsity players of Brentwood Academic and became instrumental in leading the team to win the Division II-AA state championship.
Garland was also awarded the King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic most valuable player during his sophomore year and was ranked as the best point guard in 2018. Furthermore, he also received the Naismith Trophy in 2017 and was given several accolades.
Garland’s outstanding basketball performance in his high school years made him one of the top recruits of Vanderbilt University. He signed with the university and was the only freshman student to make it to the preseason all-conference team of the Southeastern Conference. He experienced a meniscus injury during his time at Vanderbilt which left him sidelined for the rest of the season. In the early part of 2019, he announced that he was dropping out of Vanderbilt to recuperate from his injury and prepare for the 2019 NBA draft.
In July of 2019, Garland officially signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was the fifth pick during the 2019 NBA draft. His first professional game happened on October 23, 2019, when the Cavaliers faced Orlando Magic. He was the only player that was born in the 2000s who made an NBA debut during that time.
He recorded his first career triple-double in January 2022. It was in a game against the Utah Jazz.
