Larry Nance is a former professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association. He played for the Phoenix Suns and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Nance was thrice named an NBA All-Star.

He is the father of Larry Nance, Jr. who played for the University of Wyoming and later in the NBA for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. His other son Pete Nance also plays basketball and has committed to play for the University of North Carolina for the 2022-2023 season.

High School and College Career

He attended McDuffie High School in Anderson, South Carolina. In 1981, he was named to the Second-team All-ACC. Later, he committed to play college basketball for Clemson University and was there from 1977 to 1981.

Professional Career

Nance turned pro in 1981. He was the 20th overall pick in the 1st round of the 1981 NBA Draft, selected by the Phoenix Suns. He played for the Suns from 1981 to 1988. In 1985, he was named an NBA All-Star for the first time.

In 1988, he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. In 1989 and 1993, he was named an All-Star again in 1989 and 1993. In 1989, he was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team. In 1992 and 1993, he was also named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team.

He retired from playing professional basketball in 1994.
