Utah Jazz center player Rudy Gobert is hailed as 2020-21 Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year and edges out Ben Simmons and Draymond Green.
Gobert was also noted for winning the same award in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, and this is his third award. He is also the fourth player to win the same award more than three times,
Out of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters, Gobert received 84 first-place votes, with 10 points each, making him earn 464 points. Philadelphia 76ers Ben Simmons came in second place with 287 points, followed by the Golden State Warriors forward player Draymond Green with 76 points. Green was hailed as Kia Defensive Player of the Year in the 2016-17 season.
This year is Gobert’s 8th NBA season, and he led an average of 10.1 defensive rebounds per game and 720 total defensive rebounds with 190 blocked shots. He was ranked second with the most number of blocked shots per game with 2.7. According to the NBA Advanced Stats, Gobert is second place in defensive win shares, which is used to measure a player’s defensive impact for the team to win the match.
Gobert also has an average of 14.3 points, 2.24 locks, and 11.3 rebounds on his total games in his career, all with the Utah Jazz. He was also hailed as the NBA All-Defensive First Team for four seasons.
