Baseball fans will instantly spot an ace on a game’s Opening Day, except of course when there are special circumstances. An ace is a team’s best starting pitcher. Aces are usually the first pitcher in a starting rotation, and are favorites to start big playoff games. At present the term ace is also used to refer to elite or number 1 players of a team, not just starting pitchers. Likewise, a player that wears the number 1 on his baseball jersey may also be called an ace.
