Minor LeaguesMaicer was signed by the Cleveland Indians as a non-drafted free agent on April 1, 1998.

At the end of the 2003 season, he was traded to the Montreal Expos.

Major LeaguesMaicer was brought up to the majors in 2004, from the AAA Edmonton Trappers.

On November 19, 2004, Maicer was traded to the Angels, along with outfielder Juan Rivera, for outfielder José Guillén.

Maicer started his career as a shortstop, moved to third base for a while, and then returned to the shortstop position.
