Salvatore Frank Fasano was born on August 10, 1971 in Chicago, Illinois. He is a back-up catcher, currently playing for the Cleveland Indians.
Sal is 6’2” and weighs 245 pounds. He bats and throws right-handed.
Sal has played with ten major league teams over the course of his career. Well liked, his lack of prowess with the bat has always prevented him from being the starting catcher on any team. He usually is signed by teams that needs mentoring of young pitchers.
Minor LeaguesSal came up through the Kansas City Royals minor league system in three seasons.
Sal made his major league debut on April 3, 1996 for the Royals. He spent the next three seasons platooning with starter Mike Macfarlane and rising catching prospect Mike Sweeney.
Since that time, he has gone from team to team, averaging a season with each, typically replaced when a rising catcher out of their farm system was ready to come up to the big leagues. Although Sal’s catching skills are not in doubt, his batting has always held him back.
PersonalSal is the son of Vincent and Nella Fasano, Italian immigrants who settled in the Chicago area.
He and his wife Kerri have three children.
