Mona Barthel is a professional tennis player of German descent. She was born on July 11, 1990 in Bad Segeberg, Wester Germany, and she turned pro in 2009. Barthel was raised in a family that played tennis, so it was not a surprise when she showed interest in the sport when she was just 3 years old. Barthel has stated that she favors hard courts but also likes all court types.
Barthel played her first ever event in her career at the ITF Circuit in 2007. The following year, she then participated at her first WTA qualifying which was held at Stuttgart. Fast track to a couple of years later when she had her first Top 100 season in 2011. At the same time, Barthel also won titles in the ITF Circuit.
Through the years, Barthel mostly ranked somewhere around the Top 50 areas, although at times she dropped out of the Top 100. As of 2017, she stands at rank No. 4 in Germany, behind Maria, Goerges, and Kerber.
Since turning pro, the right-handed player has a career record of 281 matches won and 185 losses. She has gained 4 WTA titles, and 5 ITF titles so far, but no Grand Slam title yet. The highest rank Barthel has been able to achieve was at No. 23, which she attained in March 2013. As of March 2018, she is also ranked at No. 65. In doubles, Barthel also boasts of 2 WTA titles and 1 ITF title to her name. She is ranked at No. 227 as of October 2017.
