Jo-Wilfried Tsonga may have secured his 10th career ATP Tour title with a three-sets victory over Tomas Berdych in Sunday’s Marseille Open 13 decider but he says he needs to continue to improve.
The Frenchman has been trying to close in on tour leaders Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer under the guidance of new coach Roger Rasheed.
Tsonga defeated world number six Berdych 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in a sure-sign of his improvement under Rasheed however he knows there’s plenty of work to do to reach his goal.
“I have been working hard for some time, I make sacrifices. I do everything I can to be on top and I still improve,” he said.
One of the highlights of Tsonga’s triumph in Marseille was his resilience, having saved five match points in the quarters against Bernard Tomic and after struggling in the opening two sets against Berdych.
“I only focused on survival,” he said. “Nothing was going my way. He played far better than me in the first part of the match.
“He was serving well and my position on the court was bad, but I deserve credit because I never gave up. A lot of players would have done so.”
