Palermo

Unione Sportiva Citta di Palermo, better known simply as Palermo, are an Italian football club based in the city of Palermo in Sicily. They currently feature in the Italian Serie A.

Palermo were officially founded on November 1,1900 as the Anglo Panormitan Athletic and Football Club by a young Palermitean colleague of the then English council in Palermo Joseph Whitaker Ignazio Majo Pagano.

In 1907 the club was rechristened as Palermo Football Club and from 1908 to 1914 they featured in the Lipton Challenge Cup.

In 1919 the club was refounded as Unione Sportiva Palermo by a group of young university students and sportsmen. The club initially played in southern league in Italy but to financial factors was disbanded in 1927.

In 1928 however, the club was reborn after it was merged with Vigor Palermo and came to be known as Palermo Football Club. They reached the Italian Serie A in 1932 and moved to a new home, the Stadio Littorio, now known as the Stadio Renzo Barbera. They were however relegated.

Palermo rescaled to the Serie A in 1948 and became a regular flirt with the first and second divisions in Italy. They achieved relative success in Cup competitions in the 1970s but played outside the Serie A for most of the time after that.

In 1987 the club was refounded again and came to be given their current name.

Palermo made their return to the Serie A in 2004 and have grown to be a regular force in top flight Italian football since then. They qualified for the UEFA Cup in the 2005-2006 season and have been quite consistent and entertaining in their Serie A adventure so far.

Palermo play their home matches at the Stadio Renzo Barbera which can hold a crowd of 37,000. The stadium was originally built in 1932 and after undergoing renovations was a venue for the 1990 Italy World Cup.

The club bears the nicknames Rosanero (Pink-blacks) and Auile (Eagles).
