The club was founded way back in 1874 as Christ Church FC but changed its name to Bolton Wanderers in 1877. They were one of the 12 original founding members of The Football League in England and in 1894 reached the final of the FA Cup but lost 4-1 to Notts County. However in 1923 Bolton did taste FA Cup success at last in their third attempt by beating West Ham United 2-0 in the first ever Wembley final in a match christened as the White Horse Final played in front of some 127,000 spectators.
Bolton Wanderers have been shifting in and out of the English top flight for most of their history and in 1995 gained promotion to the Premiership. But they went down right after one season and immediately re-climbed the ladder to steal into the Premiership once again. Bolton have been playing in the Premier League since the 2001-2002 season and played in 2005-2006 played in the UEFA Cup for the first time in their history and reached the last 32 stage.
Bolton Wanderers play their home matches at the 28,723 capacity Reebok Stadium and at the moment are managed by Gary Megson although most of the Premier League success in this decade owes to the now departed Sam Allardyce. Bolton Wanderers bear the nickname the Trotters and foster massive rivalry with Manchester United and Manchester City.
The club major achievements include:
- 4 FA Cup (1923,1926,1929,1958)
- 1 FA Charity Shield
