The Cincinnati Royals were a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association from 1957 to 1972. The Cincinnati Royals are now known as the Sacramento Kings.
The Cincinnati Royals were originally called the Rochester Royals who moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1957. The Royals were bought by the Harrison brothers. Their team colors were Blue, White and Red. The team logo was a smiling basketball face wearing a crown. Their home arena was the Cincinnati Gardens.
The Royals already had two NBL Championship titles and one NBA Championship to their name. Maruice Stokes and Jack Twyman moved with the Royals to Cincinnati and went on to be inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame. Bob Wanzer continued to coach the team from Rochester, however the team got off to a bad start and lost Maurice Stokes to a brain injury. In 1958, coach bobby was replaced by Tom Marshall but the poor performance continued. In 1960 the Royals drafted Oscar Robertson who immediately won the Rookie of the Year. The same year also saw the appointment of new coach Charles Wolf. In 1963, the Royals drafted Jerry Lucas who won the Rookie of the Year. The combination of stars Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas made the team strong however they did not have luck winning in the playoffs. In 1966, owner, Les Harrison sold the Royals to Max and Jeremy Jacobs. The team continued loosing and missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year in 1968. In spite of the appointment of the new coach Bob Cousy in 1969 the team felt short of games to make it to the playoffs. In 1971, after five consecutive seasons of missing the playoffs, the Royals were traded to 10 Kansas City businessmen who relocated the team to Kansas City. The team went on to become the Kansas City/ Omaha Kings and later the Sacramento Kings.
In the total 1189 games the team played as the Cincinnati Royals they won 555 games and lost 634 games.
