Charlotte Hornets fan club
Charlotte Hornets were a professional basketball team playing in the NBA. The team came into existence in 1988 after the NBA wanted to expand its league by four teams. George Shinn, who was an entrepreneur in Charlotte, North Carolina, appointed Carl Scheer as the General Manager who with the help of Dick Harter, Hornet's first head coach put the franchise together. In 1987, Charlotte was granted a team along with Miami, Orlando and Minneapolis- Saint Paul.
The Charlotte team was initially set to be named the Charlotte Spirit however the name Hornets was chosen over the Spirit as the winning name by the fans. The name Hornets was derived from a remark that the British General had made describing the resistance in North Carolina during the revolutionary war. The team colors are Teal, purple and white. The team logo is a hornet dribbling a basketball. The team's arena is the Charlotte Coliseum.
Carlotte Hornets played their first match on 4th November 1988, which they lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers. That season, they finished last in the Atlantic Division with a 20 wins and 62 losses ratio.
In 1989, the Hornets struggled and finished the season with 19 wins and 63 losses. The same year Head Coach Harter was replaced with Assistant Coach Gene Littles.
In 1990, for the third time in a row the Hornets were in the last position resulting in the replacement of coach Littles with Allan Bristow. The same year Muggsy Bouges known as the shortest person in the NBA led the charts in maximum steals.
In 1991, Larry Johnson won the Rookie of the Year award and the Hornets finished sixth with 31 wins and 51 losses.
In 1992, the Hornets were stronger with the draft of Alonzo Mourning playing at the center position and finished third with 44 wins and 38 losses. The same year also saw the Hornets face the Boston Celtics in their first playoffs.
In 1993, the Hornets finished with 41 wins and 41 losses after they benched Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson for most of the season owing to injuries.
In 1994, the Hornets finished with 50 wins and 32 losses and also played in the playoffs against the Chicago Bulls. Robert Parrish, who later went on to be inducted in the Basketball Hall of Fame was included in the team the same year.
1995 saw the Hornets trading Alonzo Mourning to the Miami Heat and Larry Johnson to the New York Knicks. They missed entering into the playoffs and finished theseason with a 41 win 41 loss ratio.
In 1996, Hornets were contenders to the playoffs with a remarkable 54 wins and 28 losses under the coaching of newly appointed Coach Dave Cowens. The Hornets however lost to the New York Knicks.
In 1997, with 51 wins and 31 losses the Hornets finished third. The following year was disappointing for the Hornets as they missed the playoffs by one game finishing at 26 wins and 24 losses. Paul Silas was the new coach.
In the years 1999 and 2000 the Hornets made it to the playoffs however lost their nerve and lost.
After the 2001- 2002 season the Charlotte Hornets were relocated to New Orleans following improper funds for the new arena.
