Devon County Cricket Club

In the English domestic cricket structure the Devon County Cricket Club (CCC) makes up the Minor Counties. This club represents the county of Devon and participates in the MCCA Knockout trophy as well as the Minor Counties Championship.

The Devon CCC is based at Exmouth and it plays in matches at Torquay, Bovey Tracey and Budleigh Salterton. Three day matches are played by the Minor Counties that are at a lower level than the first class game. Currently Devon CCC takes part in the Western Division of the Minor Counties Championship.

As per the investigations done, Devonshire knew about cricket in either the 17th or 18th century. The earliest knowledge regarding cricket appears to be in the year 1799. In the year 1824 there was a county organization. On 18th August 1875 there was a county club formation in Devon which was not its own. During a meeting at Sidmouth a group of amateurs established the Somerset CCC after a match against the local side. The current Devon CCC was established on 26th November 1899 and it took part in the Minor Counties Championship from the 1901 season.

Some of the prominent players of the Devon CCC that have made an impact on the first class game are Roger Twose, Chris Read, Mark Lathwell, Roger Tolchard, John Childs, Peter Roebuck, Bob Cottam, David Shepherd, Len Coldwell and George Emmett.

In 1948 with the intention of joining the County Championship Devon made an application for first class status. On 15th March 1949 the Advisory County Cricket Committee of existing first class counties discussed the application however could not find anything to support the application.
