Yorkshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen professional major clubs in English domestic cricket. Yorkshire is the most successful team in the County Championship, which the club has won 31 times (one shared). The team's home ground is the Headingley Carnegie Stadium in Leeds which has a maximum capacity of 17000.
In the Yorkshire County cricket was introduced in the mid 17th century. On 7th March 1861 the Yorkshire county cricket club was officially formed. This club was not allowed to play first class games till January 1863. The debut first class match was played by Yorkshire against Surrey Cricket County Club.
In the 1867 season the Yorkshire team won all their matches and went ahead to win their first county championship for which this season was memorable. This good form was continued throughout the 18th century. Yorkshire scored 887 runs against Warwickshire and this great feat is the highest score in county test cricket.
After the Second World War, Yorkshire emerged as one of the most dominant teams in first class division. Brian Close was named as the captain of the team during the 1960s. In 1963 the team won the County Championship. In 1970 due to a controversial matter Close was removed from the team. After he was removed the team fell part. Throughout the 1980s the team experienced a period of immense struggle.
Till the beginning of 2000 the team could attain a small amount of success. In 2002 the team performed disappointingly and was also demoted from the first class division. In 2005 the team’s performance was enhanced and no team could defeat it until the last match. Due to this improvement the team was promoted to the first class division in 2006.
Several reputed players like Stephen Fleming, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Inzaman ul Haq, Damien Martyn, Ian Harvey, Jason Gillispie, Michael Vaughan and Brian Close have been associated with this county at some point of their careers.
