Kent county cricket club
In the domestic level of cricket in England one of the professional county clubs is the Kent County Cricket Club. This clubs plays all its home games at the St. Lawrence Ground in Canterbury. In Kent cricket was initiated in the mid 16th century. In 1806, the Kent County Cricket Club was officially formed. However the original official estimation took place in Canterbury in 1842. However for a long span of time the club was not very successful.
During the 18th century the Kent club was one of the most strong and challenging teams in the country. The Kent club comprised of John Willes who introduced the round arm style of bowling. Thus he was the initiator of the noted roundarm revolution. During the 1840s the club was very successful and won most of its games.
The Kent club attained a successful domestic status till the 1970s. The club won ten domestic trophies which comprised of 4 county championships. The reason of the success of the team was majorly the strong batting performance by players like Colin Cowdrey, Asif Iqbal and Brian Luckhurst. As the years passed by Kent became reputed throughout the world for generating the best wicket keepers in the world.
Several reputed players like Godfrey Evans, James Seymour, Derek Underwood, Colin Cowdrey and Frank Woolley have been a part of the Kent club at some time. The present 2008 team also consists of several rising stars like Geraint Jones, Yasir Arafat, Azhar Mahmood and Justin Kemp.
Kent was ranked the sixth in the 2006 county championship. Kent has won the 2007 Twenty20 tournament by defeating Gloucestershire in the final which was a very close encounter where in the last over Kent successfully chased the 13 runs required for victory.
In the limited overs tournament the team that represents Kent county is called as Kent Spitfires.
