Repsol Honda is one of the most famous MotoGP teams to enter the championships. It joined the racing circuit in 1995 and since then, has been the official factory Honda MotoGP team.
The team has had a wonderful time in the 500cc championships with Mick Doohan. Doohan won five consecutive 500cc World Championship titles between 1994 and 1998. Doohan retired from racing and joined Repsol Honda as their Racing Manager. Honda had a few cold seasons before a certain Valentino Rossi came to the forefront with his powerful style of racing. Equipped with a powerful Honda bike, he ensured that the in his first four years, he got one second and three Championship finishes with the team at the 500cc and later, MotoGP, class of racing.
Rossi had a lot of issues with Honda as the team refused to meet his demands of a heavier paycheck. Honda came out and claimed that Rossi's victories were attributed more to the quality of the bike he was riding than the World Champion's ability. Rossi disliked this approach and moved out of Honda after the 2003 season. The team brought in Nicky Hayden and Alex Barros for 2004. Dani Pedrosa had come into the team to support Hayden's bid for the title and in 2006, Hayden clinched the title to break Rossi's run of 5 straight wins. Although they couldn't repeat the feat again, the team pushed hard for a competitive season.
In 2008, they will be looking to re-establish their position as the top-most team and counter the Yamaha of a vengeful Rossi.
