Detroit Red Wings

Detroit Red Wings is an NHL team from Detroit, Michigan. They play in the Central Division of the Western Conference and is one of the original six NHL teams (with Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, and New York Rangers).

The franchise was originally called Detroit Cougars (1926-30), then changed its name to Detroit Falcons (1930-32) before settling for Detroit Red Wings in 1932.

With 10 Stanley Cup trophies the Red Wings have won more championships than any other US-based NHL team - only surpassed by the Montreal Canadiens (24) and the Toronto Maple Leafs (13) overall. They have also won the Western Conference 4 times, and the Central Division 16 times.

The team's captain is Swede Nicklas Lidström.

The home arena is the Joe Louis Arena which opened in 1979 and has a capacity of 20,066.

Detroit is sometimes referred to as Hockeytown due to the high popularity of its hockey team.Edit text
