The Charlotte Sting was one of the eight original WNBA teams, founded in 1966. They had their inaugaural season in 1997, and continued to play through the end of the 2006 season, when the team folded.
The Sting posted a 143 - 179 record in their ten year career.
The Sting were the sister team of the Charlotte Hornets. When the Hornets re-located to New Orleans, the Sting remained behind. In January 2003, Robert L. Johnson, founder of BET, purchased the team, in conjunction with his founding of a new NBA expansion team, the Charlotte Bobcats.
When it became clear late in 2006 that Johnson and his partners no longer wished to keep the Sting going, attempts were made to sell them to an investment group from Kansas City. However, this deal fell through, and the team folded. Its players were sent to other teams in a dispersal draft.
Among those players were Minque Currie, Tye'sha Fluker and Janel McCarvelle.
The first coach of the team was Marynell Meadors, from 1997 to 1999. Dan Hughes coached the team for a single year, 1999. T.R. Dunn also lasted but a year - 2000.
Anne Donovan then took the helm from 2001 - 2002.
Trudi Lacey tried her hand from 2003 to 2005. Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues took over in 2005, and was coach of the team until it folded.
