Juventus play their home matches at the 27,500 seater Stadio Olimpico in Turin. The club bears the nickname of the Old Lady, the Fiance of Italy, the white-blacks(bianconeri) and the Zebras.
Juventus were founded as Sport Club Juventus on November 1,1897 by pupils from the Massimo D’Azeglio Lyceum school in Turin and two years later were renamed as Football Club Juventus. Juventus won their first Italian league championship in 1905 but from then on failed to achieve much success.
Then Fiat owner Edoardo Agnelli gained control of the club in 1923 and constructd a new stadium. Juve won the league in 1925-1926 but from then until the end of the Second World Cup did not attain much success.
From the 1950s Juventus started to dominate Italian football. They were honoured with the Golden Star for Sport Excellence to wear on their shirt after they became the first Italian side to win ten league titles.
Juventus continued dominating Italy and winning the scudetto for the next decades too and by the mid 1980s had racked up more 10 more scudetti and were honoured with the second “stella”(star). In 1985 Juve won the Euroepan Cup by defeating Liverpool in the final but that triumph was marred by the Heysel Stadium disaster in which 39 fans, mostly Juve fans, were killed.
Under Marcello Lippi in the mid 1990s Juventus won a host of Serie A titles and also the European Cup in 1996. Then Fabio Capello tookover in the mid 2000s and won back to back Serie A titles but both the titles were wiped out after Juventus were found guilty of match-fixing in the Calciopoli scandal.
Juventus are one of the most popular clubs in the world in terms of number of fans. They are estimated to have 11 million fans and 21 million supporters in Europe. The main rivals are local side Torino and Inter Milan. When Juve plays Inter it is referred to as the Derby d'Italia (meaning Derby of Italy)
Juventus has won 51 official trophies and is thereby one of the most prestigious clubs in the world. The titles include, but are not limited to:
- 27 Italian championships
- 9 Italian Cups
- 4 Italian Super Cups
- 2 Champions League
- 3 UEFA Cups
