Arsenal play their home matches at the Emirates Stadium which has a capacity of 60,365. Previously the club used to play at the Highbury Park but that stadium was too small to hold the Arsenal supporters.
Arsenal bear the nickname the Gunners and their supporters are known as the Gooners.
Arsenal were founded in 1886 as Dial Square by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich but very soon the club was renamed as Royal Arsenal.The club turned professional five years later in 1891 and were rechristened to Woolwich Arsenal.
Woolwich Arsenal joined the Football League in 1893 in the second division and got promoted to the first division in 1904. The club couldn’t manage much success and after getting relegated from the top flight moved to their new Arsenal Stadium in Highbury in 1913 and in 1914 became Arsenal FC. In 1925 Herbert Chapman became the manager of Arsenal and brought them the first period of glories. Arsenal won the FA Cup in 1930 and the league championships in 1931 and 1933.
Arsenal won the league further in 1934, 1935 and 1938 and the FA Cup in 1936. Arsenal then enjoyed a decent period of success in the 1940s and early 1950s. Arsenal also won did their first league and FA Cup double in 1970-1971 and enjoyed a good period of success in the 1970s.
In recent years of course Arsenal have become not only one of the strongest clubs in the English Premier League but one of the famous clubs in the world with a huge fanbase in the Far East as well in the USA. Arsenal appointed Frenchman Arsene Wenger in 1996 and under him have won the Premiership thrice and reached the final of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history in 2006, losing to Spanish giants FC Barcelona.
