The history of the establishent of the club is equally amusing and intricate. UD America were originally founded in 1989 as Almeria Club de Futbol (Almeria CF) but in 2001 they merged with Polideportivo Almeria to form UD Almeria.
UD Almeria are often confused with AD Almeria who played in La Liga between 1979 and 1981 and went defunct from the very next year. AD Almeria and UD Almeria are totally different clubs.
This might be the maiden season for Almeria but this tiny club is weaving wonders in the Spanish top flight at the moment. They are well above the relegation zone and under young and promising coach Unai Emery and intelligent prsident Alfonso Garcia Gabarron, Almeria are flying high in the top half of the table.
