Werder Bremen was formed on February 4,1899 as Fußballverein Werder by a group of sixteen vocational high school students who had won a prize of sports equipment to set them on their way. The name of the club came from the seldom used German word for “river island”.
In April 1914 the club became a department of Allgemeiner Bremer Turnverein 1860 and was briefly known as Sportabteilung Werder des ABTV. In January 19,1920 the club changed it name to the current Sportverein Werder Bremen. In 1922 they became the first German club to hire a professional coach.
Werder Bremen won their first German Cup in 1961 and were invited to play in the inaugural German Bundesliga in 1963 and won the title in the second season. After going through a rocky patch for well over a decade, Bremen recovered in the 1980s as they finished tunners-up in the German Bundesliga in 1983, 1985, and 1986 and won the Bundesliga in 1988. They also won the Europan Cup Winners’ Cup in 1992 and the Bundesliga for the third time in their history in 1993.
Werder Bremen won the Bundesliga again in 2004.
Werder Bremen play their home matches at the Weserstadion in Bremen. The stadium can hold 43,087 people and hosted matches during the 2006 Germany World Cup. The club bears the nickname Bremen.
