Sunderland were formed on October 17, 1879 as Sunderland District Teachers but the name was altered to Sunderland Teachers Association Football Club on October 16,1880 but soon became Sunderland AFC on limited company status. They made their debut in The Football League in the 1890-1891 season, thus becoming the first new club to join the exclusive club since its formation in 1888.
Sunderland won the Football League championship for the first time in their history in 1892. Between 1892 ad 1902, Sunderland won the league three times and finished runners-up for the same number of times.
But after their title triumph in the 1935-1936 season, Sunderland have failed to crop up among the silverware winners. They are playing in he Premiership these days but they are actually struggling to sustain themselves in the top flight rather than try and win it.
Sunderland play their home matches at the Stadium of Light. It has been their home since 1997 and can house a maximum of 49,000. Sunderland are nicknamed the Black Cats and the Mackems. Sunderland foster fierce rivalry with local team Newcastle United and contest the Tyne-Wear derby with them.
