The New York Yankees is an American baseball team based in the borough of Bronx in New York City. The club was originally founded as the Baltimore Orioles in 1901 and moved to New York under the name New York Highlanders in 1903. From 1913 they have been referred to as the Yankees.

The Yankees play in the Eastern Division of the American League and are based at the Yankee Stadium (capacity: 57,545) since 1923.

The team is the most celebrated baseball team in the World with 26 World Series Championships, 39 American League Pennants, and 15 East Division Titles. In 1999 the Yankees passed the Montreal Canadiens (24 titles) to become the most successful club in North American sports history.

The team bears several nicknames, among them: The Bronx Bombers, The Pinstripers, The Evil Empire, The Bronx Zoo.
