The Sacramento Kings are a professional basketball team based in Sacramento, California. The Kings are members of the National Basketball Association (NBA). They play in the Pacific division of the Western Conference. The team was founded in the year 1945. The team is owned by the Maloof family and Robin E. Hernreich. Presently Reggie Theus is the Head coach. Purple, Black, and Silver are the official colors of the Kings. The Kings in its history have changed their name several times. It was called as Rochester Royals in
1945-57, Cincinnati Royals in1957-72, Kansas City-Omaha Kings in 1972-75, Kansas City Kings in 1975-85 and now from 1985 its has been known by the name of Sacramento Kings.
In their debut season in 1946 the Kings won their first NBL championship. In 1947 The Kings finished 31-13 with 0.705 points, capturing their second NBL Championship in as many years, but lost in the post-season tournament finals to the Chicago American Gears. In 1949 the Kings moved on to the NBA. The Kings won the NBA title in 1951 by defeating the New York Knickerbockers 4 games to 3. It was the last championship in the franchise's history till date.
In the year 1990 which was one of the most disappointing in NBA history the team were able to win only 1 game after playing 40 games. In 1996
The Kings squeaked into the playoffs in 1996 largely due to the effort of star player Mitch Richmond, but they did not do well in the postseason.
Under the Reign of the Maloof family following the 2000 season, the Kings traded starting small forward Corliss Williamson to the Toronto Raptors for defensive shooting guard Doug Christie. With the addition of Bibby, the Kings had their best season till date in 2001-02. The team finished with a league-best record of 61-21 and stormed through the first two rounds of the playoffs and made it to the Finals where they faced the Lakers. They went down to the Lakers even after leading them by 3-2.
The Sacramento Kings play all their home games at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California. The arena has a maximum capacity of 17,317. Many known names from the team like Nate Archibald, Jerry Lucas, Arnie Risen and Jack Twyman have made it to the Hall of Famers.
In the 2007-08 season the Kings were seeded 4th at the Pacific division. They won a total of 38 games out of 82 games and did not make it to the playoffs.
