Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax, commonly known simply as AFC Ajax or Ajan, is a Dutch football player based in the city of Amsterdam. They currently feature in the Dutch Eredivisie and are the most successful Dutch club in history, having won the Dutch league a record 29 times.
Ajax are one of the five teams to have earned the right to keep the European Cup and are the only club to have kept the European Cup and do the Double.
Ajax were founded on March 18,1900 by Floris Stempel, Carel reeser and brothers Han and Johan Dade. They gained promotion to the Dutch top flight in 1911 and won their maiden Dutch national championship in 1918. They won more laurels in the 1930s and became the most successful Dutch club of that period and won the league championship again in 1946 and 1947.
Ajax won the Eredivsie title in 1957 and then in 1960. And then came the Total Football revolution in the 1960s overseen by the legendary Michels and started playing fantasy football both in the Netherlands and in Europe.
In the 1970s Ajax dominated European football, winning the European Cup for three successive years from 1971 to 1973, led by the most successful exponent of Total Football, a certain Johan Cruyff.
Although Ajax continued to win the Dutch league in the 1980s, they failed to win the European Cup again until 1995 when they won the elite trophy by defeating AC Milan in the final, thanks to a Patrick Kluivert late winner.
Since then Ajax have failed to rejuvenate themselves in Europe although they still remain a strong force in the domestic arena. Ajax have produced some of the best footballers the world has ever observed.
Ajax’s youth academy is reputed to be the vest football academy of football and possibly the last bastion of Total Football.
Ajax play their home matches at the Amsterdam Arena which can host a crowd of 51,628. The club bears the nicknames Jorden (the Jews) and Godenzonen(Sons of the Gods).
Some of the club’s major achievements include:
-29 Dutch Eredivisie titles
-17 KNVB Cups
-4 European Cups/UEFA Champions League
-1 UEFA Cup
-1 European Cup Winners’ Cup
