Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto Maple Leafs is an ice-hockey team from Canada that plays in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The team was one of the six founding members of the NHL and is one of the most successful in the league.

Founded in 1917 as Toronto, the team changed its name to Toronto Arenas in 1918, then to Toronto St. Patricks in 1919, until finally settling for Toronto Maple Leafs in 1927.

The Maple Leafs have won 13 Stanley Cups albeit the last one in 1967. In recent years the team's best result is a Division Championship from 1999/00. In 2005/06 and 2006/07 they did not make the playoffs for the first time since 1998.

Swedish top player Mats Sundin has served as the team's captain since 1997, the first European player in history to ever captain the team. In fact, Sundin is currently the second longest serving active captain in the NHL after Joe Sakic and is also the longest serving non-North American born captain in NHL history.

The Maple Leafs' home arena is the Air Canada Center, which is shared with the NBA team Toronto Raptors, and that has a capacity of 18,819.
