Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers are a Major League Baseball team located in Los Angeles, California. They play in the Western Division of the National League.

Stadium
After moving to Los Angeles, the Dodgers first played at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum from 1958 to 1961. From 1962 they have played at Dodger Stadium.

Nickname
In Brooklyn, transport at the turn of the century was by trolley cars, and citizens had to spend their time "dodging" these cars as they crossed the road to get to the baseball park where the team played. So they became known as the Trolley Dodgers. The team kept the name when they moved to Los Angeles.

History
The team was founded in 1883 as the Brooklyn Atlantics, and went through a variety of names before settling on the Dodgers for good in 1932. They moved to Los Angeles before the 1958 season, and have been in Los Angeles ever since.

The Dodgers are an iconic club for more than one reason. In 1947, General Manager Branch Rickey broke the colorline, that had prevented African Americans from playing in the Major Leagues, by bringing Jackie Robinson into the team.

Record By Decade

1958-1959
Walter Alston had coached the Brooklyn Dodgers for four years, and came over to Los Angeles with the team.

1960-1969
Alston coached for the entire decade of the 60s. His first four seasons were winning ones, and he won the World Series in 1963. 1964 was a losing season, then in 1965 they rebounded and won the World Series again.

1970-1979
Alston continued to coach during the 1970s, stepping down in mid-1976 to be replaced by Tommy Lasorda, who served out the decade.

1980-1989
Tommy Lasorda coached the Dodgers for the entire decade of the 80s, but won the World Series only in 1981.

1990-1999
Lasorda continued to coach until 1996, posting winning seasons in all but one year. In mid 1996, Bill Russell took over the reins, andcoached until 1998. Davey Johnson replaced him in 1999.

2000-2008
The year 2000 was Johnson's last year as Dodgers coach. He was replaced by Jim Tracy, who had four winning seasons but who was nevertheless replaced by Grady Little in 2005 after a single losing season.

Grady Little notched two winning seasons, although just barely, going 82-80 in 2007. Joe Torre took over in 2008.
