The first class cricket team called the Canterbury Wizards is based in Canterbury in New Zealand. The home ground of this team is Queen Elizabeth II Park which has a capacity of 20000. The team made its debut in 1864 at Dunedin. Currently this team takes part in the State Twenty20 championship, the State Shield domestic one day competition and the State Championship first class competition.
The Canterbury Wizards has won the State Twenty20 championship in 2005-06. In the State Shield competition it was victorious in the following years - 1971-72, 1975-76, 1976-77, 1977-78, 1985-86, 1991-92, 1992-93, 1993-94, 1995-96, 1996-97, 1998-99, 1999-00, 2005-06. The Shell Trophy / State Championship was won by the team in 1975-76, 1983-84, 1993-94, 1996-97, 1997-98, 2007-08. The Wizards could lift the Plunket Shield Cup in the years 1922-23, 1930-31, 1934-35, 1945-46, 1948-49, 1951-52, 1955-56, 1959-60, 1964-65.
The former notable players of the Canterbury Wizards are Richard Hadlee, Stephen Fleming, Chris Harris, Lee Germon, Dayle Hadlee, Chris Cairns, Graham Dowling, Murray Chapple, Craig McMillan, Mark Priest, Paul Wiseman and Keith Thomson.
Formerly this team used to play at Jade Stadium but now the home matches are generally played at Queen Elizabeth II Park or Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
Some of the players of the 2006-07 squad are as follows – the captain was Chris Harris along with Nathan Astle, Amandeep Singh, Andy Ellis, Michael Davidson, Shane Bond, Todd Astle, Leighton Burtt, Brandon Hiini, Craig McMillan, Luke Vivian and Iain Robertson.
The highest ever team total by the Canterbury Wizards was scored in 1996-97 while playing against Otago when they scored 777 runs. The highest individual innings were of 301 not out which was scored by Peter Fulton in 2002-03 while playing against Auckland.

In the history of New Zealand cricket the most successful domestic team has been the Canterbury Wizards. This team has won the State Twenty20 championship once, the State Shield championship 13 times, the Shell Trophy/State Championship 6 times and the Plunket Shield 9 times.
