The technical area in footballing terms is the space that is occupied by a manager, other coaching personnel and substitutes during a football match. It is usually known as the bench and the dugout.
The technical area is usually a sheltered area. The first football stadium to use a dugout was Pittodrie Stadium, the home of Scottish club Aberdeen. Dugouts were introduced there in the 1920s by trainer Donald Colman who could then observe his players from a close distance.
The technical area is usually marked by a white line beyond which the manager are not allowed to go during the time the match goes on.
