In the game of soccer, the goalkeeper is an important part of either team's defense system. The goalkeeper is the only player in the game of soccer who was allowed to use their hands at all. For any other player, using hands on the ball is a violation of soccer rules. In most games of soccer, the goalkeeper, also often called the goalie, has to wear a jersey that is distinctly different from that of their teammates in order for the referee to be able to consciously and easily tell the difference between the goalkeeper and the other players on the team.
It is only the goalkeeper who has the special privileges, abilities, and distinct uniform in the game of soccer. The goal of the goalkeeper is to prevent the soccer ball from entering the net. In this case, they may use any of a variety of tactics to keep the ball from entering the goalie net.
From their position at the end of the field, the goalkeeper can see the entire soccer field. Often times, this helps them to act as organizer of those playing on the team putting them in the correct position.
