In soccer, the foul is in the act by any player that the referee decides is unfair to any player or that goes against any of the laws of soccer. For something to be considered a foul, it must be listed specifically in Law 12 of the Laws of the Game, in which the actual infractions are listed. Also, for it to be considered a foul it must be committed by an actual player and not a substitute standing in for another player. All fouls are committed against another player, but misconduct is not considered to be a foul. Also, for inaction to be considered a foul the ball must be in play.
Some examples of common fouls are tripping somebody, jumping at somebody or charging somebody on the field, hitting or trying to hit somebody else on the field or even pushing an opponent.
