The term "derby" or "local derby" in footballing world refers to a match between two teams from (usually) the same city. The term itself is linked to the county of Derbyshire in England.

Derby matches are fiercely contested and are said to be matches where pride and honour are at stake. Crowd violence in derbies all over the world are often associated with violence both on the pitch and off it. Political, social, cultural, economic and emotional factors play a huge part in derbies.

The term "derby" is often stretched to include matches between international matches or between club sides in the same country who are traditional rivals. Matches between Spain's Real Madrid and FC Barcelona and the Netherlands' Ajax and Feyenoord are said to be derbies.
