Clean sheet

A clean sheet is a footballng term that describes a game in which the team referred to as having maintained a clean sheet does not concede a goal during the match.

The term’s origins owe way back in the 1930s when the reporters would use separate pieces of paper to record the various events of the game. If a team did not allow any goal to be scored against them, then the team’s “details of goals conceded” column would be left empty (clean sheet).
