AEL 1964 is a Greek football based in the city of Larissa, the capital of Greece’s Thessaly region. They currently feature in the Super League Greece.
AEL 1964 were established in 1964 as Athlitiki Enosi Larissas in 1964 after four clubs were merged together. They won the Greek championship in 1988 and won the Greek Cup in 1985 and 2007.
But after winning the Greek league in 1988, AEL slumped into a decline and by 2000 were playing in the third division. In 2003 because of bankruptcy the club had to rechristen themselves as AEL 1964 but started to recover themselves thereon.
In the 2004-2005 season AEL won the Grecian second division and reached the quarter-finals of the Greek Cup. They have been playing in the Super League Greece ever since.
AEL 1964 play their home matches at the Alkazar Stadium that can accommodate 13,108 spectators. They bear the nickname “The Queen Of Lowland”.
