Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger remains hopeful his side can still progress to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals despite suffering a 3-1 home defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller gave the Bavarians a two-goal buffer at the break, although the Gunners hit back through Lukas Podolski on 55 minutes.
Bayern, though, settled the contest and clinched a significant advantage ahead of the return leg in Germany when Mario Mandzukic added a third on 77 minutes.
“It will be very difficult but let’s try to make the impossible possible,” Wenger said after the game, which came just days after they were knocked out of the FA Cup.
“We must go there and try to play like we do at home. The third goal makes it very diffcult, but we will try of course.”
Victorious Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes hailed the away triumph.
“Beating an English team 3-1 in England constitutes a big success,” he said. “FC Bayern’s history shows that they have had difficulties here in the past.
“We had a great start to the game and gave an excellent display, especially in the first half, but you could also see that Arsenal are a good side and that we had to roll up our sleeves and work hard.”
