Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed his star striker Robin van Persie after his goal inspired them to a 2-1 victory over his former club Arsenal in the Premiership.

Van Persie opened the scoring in Saturday’s win after three minutes and played his part in attack as United moved into top spot on the table, with Chelsea and Manchester City drawing elsewhere.

“It was an ideal start for the Manchester United cause and it was good for Robin. I thought he was fantastic today. His movement, his penetration, was fantastic,” Ferguson told reporters.

The Red Devils boss added that the match wasn’t the usual kind of clash between the rivals, with United in the ascendancy throughout.

“It wasn’t a close game. I think it was a lack of urgency in the game throughout, far too casual. It wasn’t a usual Manchester United-Arsenal game. I know there was a lot of bookings,” he said.

Meanwhile, van Persie told Sky Sports 2 that it was a “special day” for him.

“It was a special day, it was quite a game. I think we played well,” he said.

“We had a few chances, we should have scored two or three more but in the end we’re happy with the three points which is all that matters.”
