EPL 2011: Players of the Week

In this piece, we recognize the best performances of the premier league during the past weekend.

In this piece, we recognize the best performances of the premier league during the past weekend. With so many players vying for the honor in what was a good week for football in general, this was a very tough job indeed.

Goal-Keeper – Michel Vorm of Swansea City was one of the easiest choices on this list. Petr Cech and Brad Friedel had outstanding performances for Chelsea and Tottenham respectively. But, Michel Vorm was the only man standing between Liverpool and the goalposts. It was almost impossible to count the number of saves the man made from a constant Liverpool onslaught.

Right-Back – Kyle Walker of Tottenham Hotspurs was in fantastic form against Fulham. His lung-bursting run on the right created the opening goal for Spurs and he was quite outstanding for the rest of the game. Phil Jones of Manchester United and Branislav Ivanovic of Chelsea deserve special mention.

Center-Back – Nemanja Vidic had a fantastic game for Manchester United against a spirited Sunderland side on Sir Alex Ferguson’s 25th anniversary at the club. The United skipper was a rock at the back and ensured a clean sheet.

Center-Back – Thomas Vermaelen of Arsenal deserves special mention. When this guy plays, he brings a lot of value to the Arsenal defense. Not only was he instrumental in getting a clean sheet for Arsenal, he also chipped in with a goal.

Left-Back – Ryan Taylor of Newcastle United has been having a fantastic season and he has been pivotal to Newcastle’s dream run in the Barclay’s Premier League. His strike in the weekend was a brilliant effort that deserved recognition.

Central midfield – Frank Lampard has this knack of scoring against Blackburn and he continued his run against them on the weekend. His diving header decided the match in favor of Chelsea and he was more or less in control at the center of the park for most of the game.

Central Midfield – Yaya Toure has been a tremendous asset for Manchester City and he was called on to action with the score at 2-2 against QPR. His well taken goal lands him on our BPL team of the week.

Right Wing – Aaron Lennon deserves to be on this list after his wonder goal against Fulham. Overall, he was a bit quite but the goal – incidentally his first in the Premier League this season – was right up there with the very best.

Left Wing – David Silva’s selection to this list was a unanimous decision. His goal this weekend was the stuff of dreams. He tore through the heart of the QPR defense at will and was a treat to watch throughout the course of the match.

Center Forward – Robin van Persie is in the form of his life at the moment and he continued his dream run in the premier league with yet another strike against West Bromwich.

Center Forward – The fight for this spot was between Ivan Klasnic and Gabriel Agbonlahor with the latter winning the more votes. The plain reason being the fact that Bolton had it quite easy as the scoreline suggests while Aston Villas 3-2 win demanded much more mental toughness from the striker. Agbonlahor has had a good season thus far and things look quite promising for Villa at the moment.
