Glen Roberts
Even though E. Glenn 'Fireball' Roberts may have never won a NASCAR Cup Series title, his talent was beyond doubt. Fireball Roberts went on to accumulate 32 wins in his 15 season long career. His wins include the Daytona 500 in 1962.
In his rookie season, Fireball Roberts finished second to Bull Rexford, for the next five years he split his time between NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Modifieds, after which he returned to NASCAR Cup Series full time.
In 1965, his first year back, Roberts clinched five race wins and a further four pole positions, and finished sixth in point standings. In 1958, even though he raced only 10 times, Roberts still had six wins, a second finish and a third finish, resulting in an 11th position in point standings. All this despite him having missed 80% of the races.
A reserved and pleasing person, Roberts became one of the most recognized faces of NASCAR, and personally did not like the nickname given to him. At the World 600, in 1964, Roberts had a tragic crash with Junior Johnson and Ned Jarrett, which resulted in Roberts' car landing on its roof, which immediately filled the cockpit with flaming gasoline. Even though he was pulled out of the car by Ned Jarrett, Roberts succumbed to the 80% burns his body suffered from the crash.
