Sebastian Vettel is a “future potential Ferrari driver” according to the Italian team’s chairman Luca di Montezemolo.
However, di Montezemolo wouldn’t go as far as to say the German, who has won the past three world titles in Formula One ranks, could drive alongside current Ferrari number one Fernando Alonso. In fact, di Montezemolo maintained that Alonso is “the best driver in the world”.
The Ferrari chief is an admirer of Vettel who he said had been recommended to him years ago by fellow German Michael Schumacher.
“Vettel is a future potential Ferrari driver,” di Montezemolo told German magazine Auto Motor and Sport.
“If Alonso was to retire tomorrow, for whatever reason, then I want Vettel. He’s young, he has both feet on the floor, he is down to earth and he has an overwhelming will to win.
“[Michael] Schumacher pointed him out to me four years ago, because he knows Vettel from his karting days. I must say Michael was right.”
However, he added: “Alonso and Vettel, that would be difficult. When you have the best driver in the world, you must offer optimal conditions.”
