Mercedes has confirmed 2008 Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton has moved from McLaren to Mercedes, forcing veteran Michael Schumacher out.
The 43-year-old German, who is a seven-time world champion, could retire after another disappointing season since his return from retirement, with Hamilton’s move forcing him out.
The news became official after McLaren confirmed they had signed Sergio Perez from Sauber, with Mercedes following suit shortly after.
Hamilton has been inconsistent and had his moments of controversy in the past two seasons, after winning the world title in his debut season back in 2008.
“It is now time for me to take on a fresh challenge and I am very excited to begin a new chapter,” Hamilton said.
“Mercedes-Benz has such an incredible heritage in motorsport, along with a passion for winning which I share.
“Together, we can grow and rise to this new challenge. I believe that I can help steer the Silver Arrows to the top and achieve our joint ambitions of winning the world championships.”
