Red Bull’s Australian Mark Webber has closed the gap in the 2012 Formula One Drivers’ Championship after winning the British Grand Prix from Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso on Sunday.
Webber produced a near-perfect race where he overtook the Drivers’ Championship leader Alonso with four laps to go, before taking out his second victory at Silverstone in three years.
The result sees Webber move up to 116 points in second spot in the championship, behind Alonso on 129 points.
Webber’s Red Bull team-mate and 2011 champion Sebastian Vettel finished third, and remains in third on 100 points in the championship race, while Felipe Massa, Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Grosjean took out fourth through to sixth.
“Fernando had good pace from the start, but we had the better strategy in the end. We never gave up, we kept pushing and it did not work out in the end for Fernando,” Webber said.
Alonso added: “It was very close today but at the end Mark was much quicker than us and deserved the victory. Now we are fighting for victories in the last three or four Grand Prix”.
